Tips For Boiler Maintenance

The last thing anyone wants is for their boiler to break down, particularly during the winter months. With this said it is not just during the winter that you should pay close attention to your boiler. You should look after your boiler all year round to ensure it stays in good working order, by doing this you can increase its lifespan and even improve its efficiency. Below you will find some helpful tips that our team at Hedgehog Heating have put together to help you keep your boiler well maintained all year round.

Lag Pipes – It is always best to lag your pipes before the winter arrives. You can purchase ready made pipe lagging from most DIY shops and it fairly cheap! Prevention is always better than the cure!

Turn Boiler Off – You can save a bit of money during the warmer months by turning your boiler off. If you have a combi boiler then you will just need to switch your boiler to hot water only. With this said it is a good idea to switch your boiler on once a month for around 15 minutes to help you avoid any problems appearing when the weather turns cold and you need your boiler to be fully functioning.

Keep An Eye On Boiler Pressure – To check your boiler pressure you should look for the dial on the front of the boiler, the dial should read between 1 and 1.5. If your boiler pressure is below 1 then it wont work as it should, you can simply increase the pressure on your boiler back to the normal range. If your boiler keeps losing pressure, then it would be worth calling out your local plumber to see if there is a more serious problem causing the pressure to drop.

Power Flush – Over time a sludge like substance can build up in your boiler system which results in your boiler becoming less efficient. If you call out a local plumber, they will be able power flush your system. This will clear all your radiators and pipes of any sludge build up and debris allowing it to work efficiently once again. By doing this you can also save yourself a bit of money and even increase your boilers life expectancy.

Have Your Boiler Serviced Regular – Many people often underestimate the importance of having your boiler serviced at least once a year, and it is often these people that end up paying out more in the long run. By having your boiler serviced regular not only will you keep it running efficiently but you can also save money on your energy bills as well as saving you the horror of a cold shower! When you arrange to have your boiler serviced it is important that you check that the plumber you choose is a Gas Safe Registered engineer. When a gas engineer arrives at your property to complete the boiler service, they will check the performance and safety of your boiler as well as repairing anything that is not in good working order.
