We love hedgehogs just as much as the next person but we actually got our name from the book "Good to Great" by Jim Collins and the “Three Circles of the Hedgehog Concept”
Focus on your core strengths and not on saying “yes” to every single job that comes along (especially the ones you know nothing about!) Stick to what you know best and add the most value for your customers.
How our story began
“I started and grew a plumbing & heating business down in London, and had been growing that for the last 10 years, up until March 2019. When I started out, it was just me and my van and in the beginning I did say “yes” to everyone, and every job that came my way. If I didn’t know how to do something, I’d say yes and then just figure it out. This often meant making losses on jobs, or paying “school fees” as someone I knew used to say, to learn how to get the jobs done. As long as the customer was happy, that was more important to me than any potential profits on the jobs. By the end of my time with ‘The Hamilton Group’, we were employing approx 40 people, and doing everything from plumbing, heating, drainage, electrics, bathrooms, kitchens, decorating to full house refurbishments”.
My new plan of action : FOCUS
“Being an entrepreneur and not knowing the first thing about running, or scaling, a business, I read every business book I could find, and one book, and one concept, really stood out to me early on. The book was ‘Good to Great‘ by Jim Collins, where he talked about ‘The Hedgehog Concept’, which was basically FOCUSING and not spreading yourself too thin. Which I was doing at the time, but just couldn’t see a way to change. Luckily I married a Yorkshire girl and I’m up in York full time now, ready to do things a bit differently with this new business. This time my plan is to apply ‘The Hedgehog Concept’ to my business and operate solely in the black part of the diagram to the left, and for me this means focusing on domestic central heating”.

Will certainly use again."
