We love hedgehogs just as much as the next person but we actually got our name from the book "Good to Great" by Jim Collins and the “Three Circles of the Hedgehog Concept”
Focus on your core strengths and not on saying “yes” to every single job that comes along (especially the ones you know nothing about!) Stick to what you know best and add the most value for your customers.
How our story began
“I started and grew a plumbing & heating business down in London, and had been growing that for the last 10 years, up until March 2019. When I started out, it was just me and my van and in the beginning I did say “yes” to everyone, and every job that came my way. If I didn’t know how to do something, I’d say yes and then just figure it out. This often meant making losses on jobs, or paying “school fees” as someone I knew used to say, to learn how to get the jobs done. As long as the customer was happy, that was more important to me than any potential profits on the jobs. By the end of my time with ‘The Hamilton Group’, we were employing approx 40 people, and doing everything from plumbing, heating, drainage, electrics, bathrooms, kitchens, decorating to full house refurbishments”.
My new plan of action : FOCUS
“Being an entrepreneur and not knowing the first thing about running, or scaling, a business, I read every business book I could find, and one book, and one concept, really stood out to me early on. The book was ‘Good to Great‘ by Jim Collins, where he talked about ‘The Hedgehog Concept’, which was basically FOCUSING and not spreading yourself too thin. Which I was doing at the time, but just couldn’t see a way to change. Luckily I married a Yorkshire girl and I’m up in York full time now, ready to do things a bit differently with this new business. This time my plan is to apply ‘The Hedgehog Concept’ to my business and operate solely in the black part of the diagram to the left, and for me this means focusing on domestic central heating”.

This video on the left gives you a bit of history into who’s behind Hedgehog Heating and what they’re believe in. It was made for a job booking app that we used called Tradify, and app I still use today.
As a Saffa, I first went to London to seek fame and fortune. I worked for various plumbing companies for about 2 years, got my gas, and went on my own. I started ‘Hamilton Heating’ in 2010, which then evolved into ‘the Hamilton Group’, the company featured in this video, and a company which is still going today, although may have slightly changed a bit now.
I was, and still am proud of what I did with The Hamilton Group. I built it from the ground up, worked with great people, worked for some great people too, and learnt a helluva lot along the way.
Went the extra mile to discuss further work options.
Will certainly use again."
