Why Hedgehog Heating?

We love hedgehogs just as much as the next person, but we actually got the concept from the book “Good to Great” by Jim Collins, which we interpreted as focusing on your core strengths in business, and not saying “yes” to every single job that comes along (Especially the ones you know nothing about), stick to what you know well, and where you can add the most value for your customers.

And that’s what we’re trying to do with Hedgehog Heating.

“I started and grew a plumbing & heating business down in London, and had been growing that for the last 10 years, up until March 2019. When I started out, it was just me and my van and in the beginning I did say “yes” to everyone, and every job that came my way. If I didn’t know how to do something, I’d say yes and then just figure it out. This often meant making losses on jobs, or paying “school fees” as someone I knew used to say, to learn how to get the jobs done. As long as the customer was happy, that was more important to me than any potential profits on the jobs. By the end of my time with ‘The Hamilton Group’, we were employing approx 40 people, and doing everything from plumbing, heating, drainage, electrics, bathrooms, kitchens, decorating to full house refurbishments”.

My new plan of action – FOCUS

“Being an entrepreneur and not knowing the first thing about running, or scaling, a business, I read every business book I could find, and one book, and one concept, really stood out to me early on. The book was ‘Good to Great‘ by Jim Collins, where he talked about ‘The Hedgehog Concept’, which was basically FOCUSING and not spreading yourself too thin. Which I was doing at the time, but just couldn’t see a way to change. Luckily I married a Yorkshire girl and I’m up in York full time now, ready to do things a bit differently with this new business. This time my plan is to apply ‘The Hedgehog Concept’ to my business and operate solely in the black part of the diagram to the left, and for me this means focusing on domestic central heating”.

“Brad, we are going to miss you in London – our loss is York’s gain!! You built an amazing business from scratch, and we personally had an enormous amount of great work from you, so that we could confidently recommend you. I’m sure you will succeed in your next venture and wish you every success” – Anthony de Grey

“I have been thanked personally for introducing my contacts, and even family, to Brad. I use him myself, and I completely recommend him over and above any other plumber I have come across”
